GPA sent a letter to all Members and Senators in relation to Grain Producers Australia Ltd's (GPA) legislated responsibilities to review and make recommendation on the Wheat Export Charge (WEC). In effect the WEC exists to fund Wheat Exports Australia (WEA) and the money can only be used by WEA in the execution of its duties in line with its charter under the Wheat Export Marketing Act 2008. In September 2011 the Minister announced his response to the Productivity Commission and directed that WEA should be wound up. The legislation which would enact the Minister's decision was tabled in Parliament during March.
GPA has determined a clear direction from the production sector that WEA should not be disbanded and that the WEC should not be adjusted in line with that expectation.
