ABC COUNTRY HOUR | Paraquat decision removing vital farming tool that supports moisture and soil conservation

A draft decision by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to restrict the usage of a key chemical that supports growers to protect soil integrity and existing moisture has grain producers worried about their future.

ABC Country Hour spoke to Grain Producers Australia RD&E Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said he feared the regulator may have given too much weight to overseas studies looking at impacts on birds and other animals.

"It's the second most important tool for conservation tillage in Australia and it is also important for retention of glyphosate so that we don't build resistance to that tool either," he said.

"If you take away any of these molecules our system will absolutely fall over in terms of conservation tillage."
