The ability for grain producers to make a profit and remain sustainable is being impacted by the state of local roads around the country.
A report highlighting the poor standard of local rural roads around the country by the Australian Local Government Association brought this issue to light this week.
Grain Producers Australia Southern Region Director Mark Schilling spoke to ABC SA Country Hour this week highlighting vehicle wear and tear, safety for rural communities and the need for governments to "think outside the box" to fix the problem.
"If we can't get our produce from paddock to wharf in reasonable time without breaking trucks or vehicles then our industry will struggle to be profitable and competitive internationally," he said.
"Country roads are important for country communities and there's not enough money coming to local government to support them to keep local roads up to standard."
