ABC TASMANIA COUNTRY HOUR | OGTR approves trials of GM wheat

The OGTR has approved trials of GM wheat which will take place in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Grain Producers Australia Research, Development and Extension Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann told ABC Tasmania Country Hour that the approval was a a major step towards a technology that could protect growers from severe frosts and drought.

He said the trials were likely to be held in March or April next year depending upon weather conditions.

The trial will be conducted in a controlled environment; the crops will not be commercially sold or used and would be buried following the trial.

Trials have already been held in Argentina for GM wheat; however, it is the first of its kind in Australia.
