Grain Producers Australia (GPA) congratulates Western Australian grain grower Duncan Young on being named The Weekly Times Coles Cropping Farmer of the Year 2024, recognising his leadership, innovation, and commitment to advancing Australian agriculture.
GPA Chair Barry Large said Duncan’s recognition highlights both his on-farm excellence and his significant contributions to industry leadership.
“Duncan is an asset to GPA and the broader grains industry,” Mr Large said.
“His ability to combine innovation in sustainable farming with a strong voice for growers makes him a leader in Australian agriculture. His work not only improves his own operation but also strengthens the industry through his advocacy and leadership.”
Farming 6,000 hectares in Beverley, WA, Duncan has transformed his family’s operation into a 100% cropping enterprise, integrating precision agriculture, diverse rotations, and on-farm desalination to improve sustainability and resilience.

He has played a pivotal role in research and development, hosting trials and championing best practices in soil health and crop biotechnology.
Mr Young said he was humbled to receive the award and acknowledged the high calibre of finalists across all categories.
“It’s a real honour to be recognised through this great initiative from The Weekly Times and Coles which highlights the work of incredible farmers who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in Australian agriculture,” he said.
“Every finalist has contributed something valuable to the industry, and I feel privileged to be included in that group.
Beyond the farm, Duncan has a long history of grower advocacy, previously serving as President of the WA Farmers Grains Council and now as a GPA Board Member.
His expertise in policy, trade, and biosecurity helps shape GPA’s work in securing practical outcomes for grain producers.
“I’ve always believed that to have a strong grains industry, we need growers to have a seat at the table when decisions are being made,” he said.
“Being part of GPA allows me to contribute to those discussions and help ensure growers’ voices are heard.”
Mr Large said Duncan’s recognition was well deserved, given his dedication to improving the industry for all grain producers.
“GPA’s role is to ensure growers have a strong, independent voice on issues like regulation, input costs, and trade access,” he said.
“Having experienced, forward-thinking growers like Duncan involved strengthens our ability to deliver results.”
Mr Young also credited the broader grains community for its support and collaboration.
“Agriculture is an industry that thrives on shared knowledge and innovation,” he said.
“I’ve been lucky to learn from some great mentors and to work alongside growers who are always looking for ways to improve.
“This award is as much about the people I’ve worked with as it is about my own journey.”
GPA celebrates Duncan’s achievements and looks forward to his continued leadership in shaping a stronger future for Australian grain producers.
