A significant amount of feedback received through public consultation for paraquat and diquat regulations has prompted the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to extend its final regulatory decision timelines.
The final decision was initially expected in January, but following more than 160 submissions, the APVMA has twice extended its expected response time.
Grain Central reported that the APVMA advised the timeframe extension was in direct recognition of the large volume of responses and new data presented in these submissions.
This decision has been welcomed by Grain Producers Australia, following a significant effort to present relevant science and evidence based on use of the two key herbicides in Australia's agricultural systems.
GPA Research Development and Extension Spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said it was important the extra time was given to the APVMA to ensure its decision was made with a balance between science and evidence, and the practical needs of sustainably producing grain.
GPA also commended and acknowledged the many growers who invested time to make direct submissions to the review process.
