GRAIN CENTRAL | NSW Farmers urges rejection of Wheat Port Code review findings

Recommendations for an industry-governed voluntary Wheat Port Code are frustrating grower representative groups.

This scenario has been suggested by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and supported by Grain Trade Australia, however a number of groups including NSW Farmers. Grain Producers South Australia and Grain Producers Australia believe the existing code should be strengthened.

Grain Central reported the differing views as public consultation on how the code should continue closed earlier this month, following an extension to the code last year as a part of its ongoing review.

GPA Chair Barry Large said the group had sought an extension for its submission to allow it to canvas opinions of state farming group members following the busy harvest period.

“GPA have been strong and consistent participants in the WPC’s original design and evolution, since it was first implemented in 2014, to regulate the conduct of port terminal service providers (PTSPs), to ensure fair and transparent access to ports, for bulk wheat exporters," he said.
