STOCK JOURNAL | Activists seize on Dacthal ban to push for more restrictions

Groups lobbying against chemical use focusing on human safety claims are welcoming recent decisions by Australia's chemical regulator, however the agricultural sector is maintaining science needs to remain at the root of all decisions.

The lobby groups told the Stock Journal they hoped the string of decisions would set a precedent for Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

However, Grain Producers Australia Research Development and Extension Spokesman Andrew Weidemann said snap decisions could have negative impacts for many industries.

"In the case of Dacthal it has definitely been overtaken by new chemistry and it was not widely used so we're going to be able to cover for its loss pretty easily," Mr Weidemann said.

"However, while respecting the APVMA's mandate to always look after public safety we wouldn't like to see too many of these decisions where a product is banned without a consultation period."
