Key grains industry groups launched the Biosecurity Plan for the Grains Industry at the Australian Grains Industry Conference in Melbourne.
The Plan was developed by Plant Health Australia with Grain Producers Australia, GrainGrowers and the Grains Research and Development Corporation to identify and guide biosecurity risk preparedness and management.
More than 1300 plant and disease pest threats were identified in the plan and will now be the subject of programs and activities to protect growers, industry and the economy from potential impacts.
Grain Producers Australia Chair Barry Large said the importance of biosecurity could not be understated.
"We know Khapra beetle is public enemy number one for our industry, with a potential $15 billion plus hit to the economy - and that's just one of many grains-related biosecurity challenges we face," he said.
"This plan, however, will implement the projects and initiatives we need to fight back against these pests and diseases that pose a constant threat to our livelihoods."
