THE WEEKLY TIMES | China dumps barley tariffs

China will dump its crippling tariffs on Australian barley, as tensions between the two nations continue to thaw.

The Australian grains industry has welcomed the announcement from what was its former biggest barley buyer, saying it expects barley prices to lift in Australia as a result.

China’s Ministry of Commerce confirmed on Friday that the 80.5 per cent tariffs, which brought a trade worth almost $1 billion to a grinding halt two years ago, will be lifted from Saturday.

Barley grower and Grain Producers Australia southern region director Andrew Weidemann said the announcement was welcome news for Australian farmers, who could see a significant price lift as “insatiable” demand from China re-entered the market.
