Grain growers are looking to plant more barley this year as trade tensions with China ease and canola prices slide backwards.
Grain Producers Australia southern region director Andrew Weidemann said China’s commitment last week that it would reassess barley tariffs was a positive sign for the barley market.
“The announcement is early enough that it is preceding cropping intentions, particularly in the Wimmera and southern Mallee,” Mr Weidemann said.
While many cropping programs were already set for the year, he said any uncommitted paddocks would be more likely planted to barley than competing crops like canola.
