Grower plans for cropping rotations will be more flexible, with a new seed treatment to control crown rot released in time for this winter season.
The Weekly Times spoke to Grain Producers Australia Southern Region Director and Rupanyup grower Andrew Weidemann after the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) approved the seed treatment Victrato recently.

He said crown rot became increasingly riskier when cereal on cereal rotations were used, but the treatment could allow better control and rotation decisions.
Legumes are added to the rotation in between cereals to add a break in the cropping rotation. However, there are years when it might be more economically viable to grow cereal on cereal.
“This is where the trial results of the seed treatment are going to be promising,” he said.
