Global demand for crops could outweigh the amount of supply available if production areas experience any events that impact yield.
This was the message shared by Grain Producers Australia Southern Region Director Andrew Weidemann speaking with The Weekly Times.
United States Department of Agriculture released the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates for July and while global demand increased by 1.9 million tonnes to 799.9 million, world trade remained unchanged at 212.9 million tonnes.
Currently Australia’s overall wheat production is tipped to be higher than last year at 29 million metric tonnes compared to 26 million tonnes, but a delayed and dry start to the season has concerns locally for the projected numbers.
Rupanyup farmer and Grain Producers Australia southern director Andrew Weidemann said any hiccups in key production areas would paint a different picture.
He also said there were growing areas within Australia, including the south west of Victoria and parts of South Australia where production risk was high due to lack of rain.
“Western Australia is certainly not out of the woods either,” he said.
